Brief Thoughts on Beauty

At the prompting of a friend, I recently did something I NEVER imagined I’d do:  I entered a beauty contest.  Prior to this, the closest I ever got to a beauty contest was at the age of 11 when my paternal grandmother, concerned over my newfound interest in softball, insisted that I attend charm school at a local Dillard’s.  The week spent learning how to brush my hair (down, not up) and practicing my pageant stance left little of an impression on me, although I did enjoy the complimentary Dillard’s outfit.  My choice of some totally rad cuffed jean shorts only elevated my grandmother’s concerns.

Nearly 20 years later, I was alerted to the fact that MORE Magazine was having a nationwide beauty search.  I was persuaded to enter when I saw the prize money (HEL-lo!) and the personal essay criteria: a 1,500 character essay on “what makes you beautiful”.   I immediately thought, “hey, that’s about the length of a song!”  Since I’ve never written a song about this topic, I considered it a challenge.

It turned out to be more of a challenge that I thought.  Have you ever actually thought about what makes you beautiful?  Personally, I try to avoid thinking about it, as I worry that I’m already too fixated on my appearance.  But beauty is the elephant in most (read: all) women’s rooms, so avoidance is not really effective.  We’ve all seen enough Disney films to know that beauty is found within, but what does that really mean, and why are so fixated on it?

About a year ago, I read a book called Captivating that helped me answer that question, and changed my perspective on beauty as it pertains to women.  I’d encourage you to wade through it’s numerous chick flick references to the heart of the book’s message: beauty is valuable to the God that created it.  As women, we are made in the image of God, reflecting different aspects than those he gave to men.  God, as the creator of beauty, has imparted his love for it especially (though not exclusively, of course) to women.  Our desire to make things beautiful, and to make ourselves beautiful, is rooted in a divine place. In fact, its something the world NEEDS.

Like all of creation, beauty can be, as has undoubtedly been, exploited and twisted (My friend Brenda expands on this on her blog, which I recommend).  But this doesn’t mean we should give it up.  By striving to make things beautiful in their purest form, we are actually redeeming God’s creation.  And that is a worthwhile endeavor.

demos, demos, demos!

Over the weekend, Richard and I began the loooong process of demo-ing my song catalog.  Since the last single I released this past December, I have 35 new songs that I haven’t recorded.  For any non-artist types reading that last sentence, let me assure you that this is risky business.  I write mostly in my head, a method I’ve been told  is…unconventional…but, more importantly, dangerous when I have a billion other thoughts pinballing their way around in there.  Its easy for melodies to get pushed out.  And so, demos.

The demo process is a great way for me and Richard to practice our engineering skills.  Let me re-phrase: it is a great way for Richard to practice his engineering skills and for me to tell him what a great job he is doing.  Recording music is an expensive endeavor, and since we plan on making music for the rest of our lives, we have to either become fantastically wealthy or turn our variable costs into fixed ones (MBA alert!). Our odds are on the second option.

We’ve been expanding our modest home studio bit by bit, with some instruments and software I won in a songwriting contest last year, and, most recently, with a new mic pre-amp: the Neve API Lunchbox.

Now, I know it doesn’t look sexy, but if you could only hear how smooth this thing makes vocals sound.  Oh wait, you WILL hear :)

Let Your ShamRock

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is not just corned beef and blarny stone.  It also marks the beginning of a magical time of year: March Madness!  Yesterday, our* beloved Memphis Tigers suffered a crushing first-round loss in the NCAA basketball tournament (just one of many bracket-busting defeats…Norfolk State? LEHIGH?!) Adding insult to injury, they lost to a team whose mascot is an imaginary elf doll.  This, however, in no way dampens my pride in wearing this shirt.  Get ‘em next year, Tigers!

*I’m pre-supposing that everyone is a Tigers fan

MVS-7

Last night my music video for “You Can’t Hold It” was shown at the 7th Annual Live From Memphis Music Video Showcase, otherwise referred to as MVS-7, for economy of phrasing. It was my first time attending a music video festival, much less having a video featured in one. Here’s a re-cap of the evening’s videos. Although I didn’t take home any golden VHS tape trophies (yes, seriously), my friends Fast Planet got the Audience Choice award! Way to go, guys!

Well, folks, its here! And who better to start off your Valentine’s Day evening than the man with the sexiest voice in country music – Josh Turner. At least, in my humble opinion :)

My Galentine

V-Day countdown: Day 7!

Today I am throwing a Galentine’s party for my lady friends (i.e. gal-entine’s…get it!) I got the idea from an episode of the always hilarious Parks&Recreation (anyone who hasn’t seen it, Seasons 1-3 are instant streaming on Netflix. Do it). I thought it sounded like a really fun idea, especially for my single girlfriends, who generally dread the notion of Valentine’s Day, but would rather not consume an entire 2 LB bag of peanut butter M&M’s alone on the couch. In honor of Galentine’s, here’s a totally uncreative song for ladies, because…well…we like to dance to it :)
